Radical Generosity

Last month during Domestic Violence Awareness Month we had the opportunity to speak with Shelter Director, Patima Komolamit from our five-year shelter partner Center for the Pacific Asian Family. We got a glimpse of what it is like for the sheltered children we serve when the PRESENT NOW gifts are delivered. She shared that the children get so excited when the presents arrive.

They have begun to recognize the big white boxes with the perfectly tied purple bows, and they know there is a gift inside! The children do not always know if the presents are specifically for them; however just seeing the presents  in the building is exciting! That excitement sends a ricochet of joy and gratitude throughout the entire shelter.

As we enter the Holiday season, we want to pause to acknowledge the power of generosity and how your generosity contributes to our ability to bring joy to children living through one of the most difficult experiences of their life…even if just for a moment. Our hope is that with your continued support, we will not only be able to extend those moments of joy but that we will continue to play a pivotal role in helping each child learn the healing power of gratitude.

Research suggests that “expressing gratitude can positively change your brain.” Additionally, it can make people happier, improve relationships, and potentially even counteract depression and suicidal thoughts.” Knowing this, we are inspired everyday to do our part to help break the cycle of domestic violence.

Why Giving Tuesday

The GivingTuesday movement is about reimagining a world built upon shared humanity and radical generosity. It’s a simple idea: whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to contribute toward building the better world we all want to live in. If you are reading this, you play an instrumental role in fulfilling the vision and mission of PRESENT NOW. The reality is that, sometimes we overlook the little things that we do to show kindness in the midst of living our daily routines. However, it is the little things like:

Sharing this article, telling a coworker about our upcoming events

Volunteering once a quarter in our warehouse space

Connecting us with a business owner who has the capacity to donate a percentage of their sales, etc.

that not only cultivates the spirit of generosity but also helps us realize our organizational goals of ultimately providing more opportunities for children living in domestic violence shelters to experience joy.
